DORRIGO
Dorrigo has a population of 1192 people and an altitude of 762 metres above sea level. It
has an average annual rainfall of around 2500mm and holds the Australian record for the
most amount of rain in 24 hours - more than 900mm. Because of its high rainfall and
fertile basalt soils, the Dorrigo Plateau is a major agricultural area. Its main farming
activities are dairying, potatoes and beef farming with more and more people turning to
fish farming over recent years.
Dorrigo is a major tourism destination with more than 300 000 visitors annually taking the
scenic mountain road to the National Park and its award winning Skywalk. As well as
boasting an amazing array of flora and fauna, Dorrigo also has the largest collection of
steam locomotives and carriages in the Southern Hemisphere - more than 120 engines and 300
carriages. So far it's only a static display, but the plan over the coming years is to
have a fully functioning tourist railway on the historic Dorrigo to Glenreagh line.
